What if you don’t want all the debt? Are the travel hackers right? Can you travel without credit cards?

We have all heard the many travel hackers out there say: “Get this credit card and you get this many miles. Then you get this other credit card and you get these perks at hotels. Then you get this credit card and you get miles when you spend $3000. That’s how we travel for free!”

Let’s evaluate this for just a second. You open 3, 5, or even 10 credit cards to get the perks and miles. You spend however much money specified by the credit card to get said perks, and then you’re left with a ton of debt and credit card accounts. Are you really traveling for free?

We actually don’t think so. We were raised to believe having tons of credit cards and debt is a bad thing. Not to mention, when you aren’t traveling anymore, and you close those accounts it hits your credit score in a negative way. We’ve not heard any travel hackers tell me how they pay off the mountains of debt and what their credit score looks like after they close those accounts.

We wanted to do this differently. We believe you can travel without all of that, and guess what, we did exactly that for an entire year!
