“Travel isn’t always pretty. It isn’t always comfortable. Sometimes it hurts, it even breaks your heart. But that’s okay. The journey changes you; it should change you. It leaves marks on your memory, on your consciousness, on your heart, and on your body. You take something with you. Hopefully, you leave something good behind.” – Anthony Bourdain
“We want to travel with children someday.” This phrase for some reason always gets a passionate response from people who never actually travel with children. As a general rule, everyone thinks your life of travel, fun, and adventure stops when you have children. We disagree, and so do our guests on today’s episode.
We are so excited to be chatting with Nick and Brittany of the YouTube channel, Family On Standby. Nick and Brittany travel with two small children exclusively on standby, and film videos for YouTube. As travel vloggers, we know the work and effort that goes into filming video, yet they do this with two children under 4 years old. They may be superhuman, we aren’t totally sure. Either way, we had a fantastic conversation with them full of advice, tips, and reasons why you should be traveling with your children.
A bit more about Family On Standby:
“We’re not your standard full-time traveling family. We’re parents with full-time jobs – and amazing work benefits. As part of an airline, we have the privilege to travel the world for free. Just one catch. We fly standby.”
That’s our YouTube intro and we think it’s pretty fitting. We’re your average working parents who happen to love travel, photography, and blogging. So we found a way to combine it all into one: travel vlogs! This hobby was born out of our inability to have kids, so we just kind of poured ourselves into creative work and travel. And then when we finally had kids, we were like “why should we stop?”, even after tons of people told us the opposite.
Our goal is pretty simple: we want to inspire people, parents, in particular, that travel with kids is possible and can even be a blast. And our hope is that seeing us do it in the most unorthodox and potentially difficult way possible, parents will feel empowered to pick up the kids and go!

“You get what you get and you don’t complain.” – Olivia (We find it quite fitting, though not sure where she heard it….)
In today’s episode, we visit with Nick and Brittany of Family On Standby. Fellow YouTubers with a very interesting slant, Nick and Brittany travel with their two small children exclusively on standby. We had a great time getting all of their tips and advice on how to travel with children. We discuss the positive impact travel has made on their children’s lives and personalities, what it’s like to travel as a family of four on standby, and a real-life look into what travel is really like with little ones. We hope to follow in their footsteps someday and continue traveling after children. This conversation gave us so much hope and excitement on this subject, but most of all, they convinced us why we should travel with children. We hope you find so much value in this discussion. Thank you for listening!
